the first time humans noticed Mars, its appearance
has been noted and studied and even mythologized.
The images here, listed individually or in groups,
represent the way humans have envisioned Mars
through art, using knowledge or imagination
or, often, a bit of both. And remember, while
many illustrations of Mars were printed in black
& white, the great majority were originally
done in color. All published versions of an
